if I read the first post post correctly, the Avanti auction is in Harrisburg, PA, which if one watched the recent Mecum auction does not bode well for higher prices. Ken, Deltaville, Va

Thinking of the title of this thread...and lumping the Avanti among "Estate/Yard Sale" items like bar stools, wall hangings, and garish chairs...it could be a case of "the company you keep!"

Is an Avanti a piece of 'art', or is it an 'automobile'?

I can't think of any other postwar US car that has been in more art galleries than any other car.

Did you look at the paint job? It looks like someone painted it with the wrinkle paint used for some instrument panels like my TR3. Upon reflection, I think someone painted enamel over lacquer without stripping it.

For $6000.00 to $8000.00 it MUST be a "Parts Car" for sure!

Hmm ... I guess THIS is why:

'62-'63? Year Model? and BLUE, yeah right!

They don't even mention that it is an R2 Supercharged with Power Windows and what looks like a very nice Turquoise Green Interior.

Supercharger and electric windows. Is 6K - 8k too much?

If the frame, hogs, and a pillers/windshield frame are good it is definitely a "steal" at that price. There are people on this forum who thought a project R1 with a lark/hawk engine and missing beau coups parts was a good deal at $4500 (hopefully, it was putchased for much less).

If I had the storage and didn't already have more than I can ever hope to deal with, I would be a very active bidder.

I would not let the paint throw me as most cars are repainted anyway. IMHO, it just has a very aged lacquer job that went south.

i put in a bid, but I'm not sure how far I'm willing to go. I am looking for a car because I'm almost finished with my 57 GH and this forum has made it much easier to restore it so another Studebaker makes sense. Even though I don't have a lot of posts I get answers almost every day by looking at past posts and threads. The only down side is that Photobucket's change in policy has made it more difficult to do that.

Up to $6k. There is an 18% buyer's premium on top of that.

Ive been trying to find out if it runs and drives, and get photos of the hog troughs and frame... no answer to any of it. That will be an expensive strip and repaint too. With an 18% buyer's premium, I'm out, though it still could be a good deal if the bottom is nice and it drives.

I'm not sure... does micro-blistering occur with fibreglass cars in the same it does with metal?

If so, that'll be one heck of job to get the paint off without gouging the bodywork to pieces!

I don't think the paint issue scares me as much as the other unknowns re: frame etc.

If it were a 4 speed, I might find someone to go check it out.

Still a supercharged Avanti is pretty desirable even if it is an auto. I am actually a fan of that color. Have a good buddy who has an R1 4 speed in that color.

I was bidding, but now I'm out. With the buyers premium it is already an almost $8000 car.

If there car were sitting here at my house, and if it looked decent other than the paint, I would be fine plunking down $10k for it, assuming it is a REAL from the factory R2 car and still retained its original born with drive line. But, it is a long way away from me.
Has any one verified the car is a true R2? And that it has its original engine?

The engine number could be RS1314. Hard to be sure from the pictures. All the rest of the equipment looks to be correct.

I mean RS1415.
