Since more pictures probably wont be posted until closer to auction, and the car gets there, here are some I took. You can also go to my website and see lots more during the restoration. The car(s) are owned by Jay Stelzenmuller III.6594465945659466594765948

That turquoise R3 is stunningly beautiful. I'd rather have it with a 259, powershift, and all the options available though, i.e. AC, PS, PDB, etc.. But that's just me. They sure were nice looking cars. Almost too nice to be a factory hot rod. :)

To invest the copious amount of monies that Mr. Bez gets for his restorations, one must realize it has to be a labor of love and devotion to the car.
Avantis will never return big block Corvette money.......I applaud those with deep pockets to undertake such endeavors, but just do not think you will recoup your investment and then make a profit on top of that.

I wish I made copious amounts of money!!! Try ANY professional restoration shop, and I am very competitive. Not your local body shop that has to farm everything out.
BTW, the last Avanti I restored (just cosmetic) an R1 sold for 59K. Also recently worked on an R2 4 speed (last week) that sold for 71K.

Bez,
IMHO you do professional level work that few, if any, here could rival. I understand and accept that such quality work is costly. Why should you not be compensated fairly for professional level work? Maybe when I win the lottery I will bring you the blue & white 56J for a total resto. Unfortunately, that's about the only way that could ever happen, but it sure would be nice to have it looking like new again. :)

I do not know if you have had a restoration done by Mr. Bez. If not, I do not see how you can validly comment on his pricing.
I do agree that one would not get their money out of having a professional restoration done on an Avanti, no matter what company does it. Not everyone does it to make money. Most all hobbies cost money (skiing, golf, etc.)

I have made some more inquiries to this R3 5590, and here is what I found out from Gary Johnson. This is 5 years after I restored it, but better late than never. I asked before, but no one seemed to remember it then.

After talking to warren, yes was Gloria Hawkins car from ABC motors a big dealer here. He knew granatelis and bought a complete R-3 kit. Probably in December of 1963. Even got new rear differential. I bought the old one was still clean. He put the R-2 in the 64 convertible I own and sold it to a customer. I still have it. Tom Hawkins was a big Studebaker guy and race horse fan. Was owned by a guy in military, an officer who got transferred to Georgia. He took the car there around 1977. I could look it up. I worked on it in the 70s. Always wondered where that went. gary

Jay bought it from this military officer in Georgia, from Fort Benning.

Was stationed at Ft. Benning in 79 and viewed up close this car in Columbus. Same car for sure and definitely had the R3 motor in it at that time. Wheels were different from the auction photo and was in nice condition at that time. Nice to know it still survives.

Ask Matt about polishing them!. It was black when I started on the restoration, but I returned it to the original turquoise, except added some pearl to the formula. I stripped it down to the bare fiberglass.

for Avantis, i believe that is so. a few years ago, a '57 Golden Hawk went for near $100K.

As the guy in the magazine auction report says "Very well bought." and most likely not what the sellers were hoping for. My guess is that's about half what they cost to build.
