I'm getting 40 lbs of oil pressure at idle on my freshly rebuilt 289. Is that good, bad, typical?...

After warmed up, that's what I get.

Depends on weight of oil, outside temp, engine temp, and whether just slowing down after 50+ miles of hammering down the highway, or puttering around town. Mine generally idle at 30-40 PSI, and run down the road at 45-50 PSI. I use Mobil 1, 15W50 oil, year round, with 195 degree stat to keep motor temps around 190 degrees. After a fresh rebuild, a 259/289 will often run a little higher for the first 5000-10,000 miles.

nice and high... drive it for an hour and be happy with 25lbs. Most important is 50mph down the road... should be @ 40-50lbs.

Joe Hall's response is similar to what I would have posted, including recognizing that you mean PSI when you state "lbs".
