  • Transmission / Overdrive: T86 not engaging reverse or first

I have removed the transmission expecting to rebuild. But before i order parts what should i be looking for as far as the malfunctioning of the transmission. Any chance the overdrive could be causing issues or can that be dismissed? Does anybody have recommendations for where to order rebuild parts?
    Thanks for the help

might have checked rods and levers before removal unless other rebuild needs. Parts are everywhere-maybe even at your local NAPA.

Once I had an issue with my '64 wagon with OD. I parked it in front of my garage and couldn't back up next AM. Seems that the OD solenoid was defective and wouldn't disengage if I remember. I pulled the solenoid which was locked in and replaced it. Start with simple!

Remember the "Gus's Garage" stories in the popular science magazines? One time he thwarted some crooks who forced him to work on their car by secretly hot wiring the O.D. solenoid. When the crooks ran into a road block, they were stuck because they couldn't back up (when the solenoid is engaged). It's a safety feature built into the O.D. unit.

Describe any "grinding" noises your tranny exhibited when in operation. Just in 1st/reverse, or 2-3 also ?

The Gus's Garage story is amusing. Thanks for posting.

It's not the overdrive. Certain overdrive troubles might keep you from going into reverse, but they will NOT keep you from going into first.

Are you having trouble going into first with the engine running? How about with the engine stopped? If it only happens with the engine running, look at the clutch. If it is dragging just a bit, it will make a racket trying to get into any non-synchromesh gear, like first or reverse.

It's always better to troubleshoot fully before disassembling something, but that is a moot point now.
