Hi I am new to studebakers. Trying to identify this model. 57/58 golden hawk. engine has the generator (not alternator)on the left hand side with the power steering pump attached to the back of the generator. All the pictures that I can find on the web all have the generator on the right. The oil filler is in the middle at the front of the engine with the oil filter beside it. It may have had a supercharger but not there now. The air filter is on the right, with the filter element sticking out of the bottom. In the back of the trunk there is a rectangular box sitting cross wise, maybe a A/C heat exchanger. Any help would be appreciated.

It appears you have a very rare air conditioned Golden Hawk. The combination PS/generator and trunk mounted condenser point to optional NOVI AC unit.

There are some pictures of a '58 Golden Hawk engine compartment with AC, @ Bob Johnstone's site:
http://www.studebaker-info.org/tech/...58ghawkac.html .
The gen and ps pump are as you describe; and make room for the AC compressor, on the right. I think Chevy used this setup in '58, too.
The car on Bob's site has a lot of late '50's / early '60's mods. Visible are "DO" supercharger, extra oil filters, "AC-on-o-mizer" fuel pressure regulator, and Mallory "Magspark" ignition.
Golden Hawk engine serial #'s start with PS-1001 for '57; and PS-5501 for '58. The # is stamped into the block, near the oil fill pipe.
If you have a Golden Hawk with AC, it's a rare bird! I suggest you order the build sheet from the Stude Club Museum.

FWIW, on the photos in BobJ's page, he says,
"Sutton used the same huge two cylinder compressor as did the Novi units but only on the Packard Hawk and 1958 Golden Hawk. This time it had an electric clutch."
The unit in the photo is the same four-cylinder Lehigh compressor used in the 1955-56 Packards.

Body number is correct for a '57 Golden if you haven't already figured that out.

PL3809 does sound very much like the 1964 numbering code, however, the 'L' wasn't used in that system.
This engine is actually a 1956 289 built for the Los Angeles plant. It might have a .5 higher compression ratio than the original engine. Other than that it's identical.

darn, I didn't know they skipped both the "I" and the "L" in the 64 system, thanks for correcting the brain fart.
