My '83 (Blake) Avanti 'Everyday Driver' has been good to me!...I've put on about 250 of the 350 thousand miles which are on it's odometer!.....So, over the past few weeks, I decided to give her a facelift....suspension work, a complete tuneup, and fixing all the little chips & cracks in the fiberglass body.

Lastly, a new paint job, restoring the red color this Avanti left South Bend with!....The original color was Ford 'Rangoon Red', which never appealed to me, so I went with a 70's Chrysler 'Tapestry Red' (code R7), which is similar to original '63 Studebaker 'Avanti Red', but with a fine gold metallic flake in it.

I'll post more pix when I get her back together!....SN-60 :)

(This new color is quite a bit darker than these pictures indicate)

Lookin great Ed!
I still think an excellent way to complete the, "face lift" would be to tastefully modify a 56-61 Hawk grill to grace the front end. You'd be the first kid on the block, and may actually start a fad in the Avanti world :)

Yes, looks really good Ed! The red looks nice on an Avanti. Did you do the paint yourself?

Thanks Joe!...I know folks around here will ask if I 'got another one'! :woot:!

About that grille...When I think of a grill grafted onto an Avanti front nose panel, I can't help thinking of the '64 Avanti advertised in TW years ago.....Someone installed a '48-'50 Packard center grille in that car.....That 'look' really didn't make it Joe!

Well, Ed, painted red it will be easier to find in a New England snowbank :!:

Very nice red, I like. Thumbs down on the Hawk grille.... They don't look that great on a Hawk, and the cool vibe of the "face" of the Avanti would be rendered ghastly.

Maybe a 65 Stude grill, going all the way across, of course with the grill's headlight rings removed?

Yes Paul, that's my work (ulp:eek:!).....Actually, this is the third time I've squirted this Avanti.....The first time was in '95, just after I purchased it from Lee Newman (Newman-Altman)...I put the original 'Rangoon Red' back on it....By about '05, that red had faded to a horrible reddish-orange, so I gave it a quicky white paint job using Chrysler 'Glacier White' acrylic enamel....And in this last paint job I used Chrysler 'Tapestry Red', acrylic enamel (Centari)

PS....Thank you for the compliment! :))

Thanks again Joe, I just 'plugged away' at it after hours for the last month or so..... Also, I've been fortunate the weather around here has been good enough to allow me use my '63 R2, and occasionally the '55 Speedy, to get to work and run some daily errands. :)

The good old '83 Avanti is just about done! (finally!).....My pal Ron stopped by today to check my Avanti out in his recently acquired '32 Ford tudor sedan (from California)...sweet ride!...Put together VERY nicely! :!!:

That's CORRECT Brad!....Originally this Avanti was finished in acrylic lacquer, however, I felt since it's in use basically year round, come what may, acrylic enamel (with hardener added) would be a more durable choice.

Of course, we both know that if this '83 was ever restored as a true 'show' car, with originality as the prime concern, lacquer paint would HAVE to be used.

As an aside,.... lacquer is, of course, the ONLY paint that should be applied to a STUDEBAKER AVANTI if the owner of said Avanti is concerned with 100% authenticity!

( PS....The bumpers on my '83 were originally chrome plated too Brad, but, once again, this car is a true 'everyday driver', proudly holding the Studebaker/Avanti flag HIGH! :!!::!!::!!:

Of course you realize it is no longer an Avanti, because you changed it from as built. ;)

Now that you mention it, I believe you are correct. But I am pretty sure that IS the original paint on the 32 Ford.

It's not a Studebaker either, but we're not allowed to judge...

I like how you've placed the Studebaker script centered between the back up lights.

Thanks Mark, I saw that done to an Avanti in an old issue of 'Turning Wheels',..liked it,...and RAN WITH IT!! :)

Ed, just about everyone knows you are the leading troll on this forum since before and after you were banned a few years ago. somehow you managed to get reinstated. not only that, you seem to post an update almost every day with useless information just to get your thread back to the top.

but... i do like the paint job you did.

Mods, delete my post if deemed not appropriate.

I was reinstated because the 'powers that be' realized that folks like you (and the other 'usual suspects') were the real problem on this forum:(.....And now, once again we see you ruining a thread started by me.

Thanks for the compliment on the paint job though....and, hey, your self-serving post allows me to get this thread to the top again....WELL ALL-RIGHT!!! :!:

It's too bad that Studebaker didn't use the '64 style 'Studebaker' script on the '64 Avantis. :!: Personally, I think it looks a lot nicer than the '56 style which they indeed did use! :(

I think it woulda looked better if they'd used the same lettering as on the Champ truck tail gates. Easier for folks to identify what they are looking at from afar. That way, admirers do not have to tailgate in order to determine what the car is.
