  • Transmission / Overdrive: Need info on changing 63 Flight-o-matic to 1rst gear start

    I'm getting the transmission rebuilt for my 63 R1 Cruiser with the Flightomatic. I bought a NOS first gear start valve body from Ted Harbit. My transmission man wanted to know if there were any other changes he needed to do to the transmission other than installing the first gear start valve body.
    Anyone who has performed the mod? Thanks

      I am sure there are a whole lot of things you COULD do to beef it up or improve it, but they are not "MUSTS".

      The FIRST thing I would do is make sure it IS the H.D. Oil Cooled Flight-O-Matic with the 2 Brass fittings on the right side for a radiator cooler line or a separate Oil Cooler, as some early R1 Lark/Hawks did not have it.

        Mine is the water cooled H.D. with the oil lines to the radiator.

          The Trans. is OIL cooled, but the Oil is water cooled.
