  • Electrical: Alternator equipped '64 8E5 Champ p/u

On 4-28-2017 I wrote: “When I go to install the new wiring harness, I will need to know what alternator to buy for this truck AND how to connect it to the voltage regulator. It carried a factory DEVIATION and was equipped with an alternator, missing when I bought the truck. The wiring for this is not covered in the shop manuals. That means I will have to find out how the alternator is connected to the voltage regulator, too.

I saw a similar set-up on a Lark a few years ago. On the left side of the alternator was a wire lug (1/4") surrounded by a red disc. There was a two-wire plug with a black wire and a blue wire. On the right side was a wire lug (1/8").”

Stude Norm responded:” If you want to keep it stock let the forum know what year you have and someone should be able to get you the model number for the alternator you require.”

    So, I have a ‘64 Champ 8E5 pick-up, 6-cyl, 170 OHC. Anyone know the model number I require? I hope to become

Can you post a scan of the Production Order? It may provide a clue, at least enough info to locate the part number in the Parts Catalog.

RSykes, the 8E truck parts manual doesn't have a Special Fleet Sales Equipment section in it (at least that I could find), but the '59-'64 Passenger parts manual does. For the 1964 model year only, there was a 52 amp alternator available. The alternator was p/n 1562268, and the regulator was p/n 1562271.

I would expect that the Studebaker National Museum could locate Deviation Order 5605 and it may verify the part number of the alternator, and they may even be able to come up with a drawing showing how it wires to the regulator.

I can tell you that this p/n 1562268 did show up in the Newman-Altman Master Price List published in 1987. There may be a chance that Studebaker International would have the alternator, since they purchased the Newman-Altman/SASCO stock.....and I doubt there has been a huge call for these alternators over the years.

Keep us informed. I love quests like this.

Got a response from Ingvar Vik. He said he thought stndard equipment was a Prestolite 34 amp ALK 5001 or 40 amp. Regulator PN's Autolite 8-724GRC-724, BW R-280, Std VR101, NAPA VR1001. But then, the bui;ld order for my truck calls for a 52 amp alternator. Leaves me in a state of confusion. In addition, my present regulator has five blades: GRD, F, 2, 3, 4. No guidance as to what wires connect where on this regulator. Very discouraged. I have three different wiring diagrams, none of which assist in figuring this stuff out. Since I can't start the truck, I can't take it to an ignition shop--and I don't believe ignition shops do house calls.

May I suggest you put on a one wire GM alternator on to get the truck running. Then look for the factory parts at a later date.

I'm agreeing with #6 post. Rich or someone should have the factory application info for this set up...

I have had three different wiring diagarms. I have had no luck. I have no clue as to how to connect the electronics since the regulator recommended is one that has five spades: G, F, 2, 3, 4. "G" is obviously ground, "F" is field? What are "2," "3," and "4"? I do not know what "one wire" means except that the alternator would have one wire. But, where does it connect? Yipes! I need to be smarter or more informed than I am.
